MAGNA — I have been going to the theatre since I was a young child and have participated both on stage and off for longer than I can remember. Because of this, it is rare that I have not seen at least some production of a show, unless it has recently been written. So the fact that I have never seen Oliver! on stage was somewhat exciting for me. I have, of course, seen the movie version and know many of the songs by heart. When given the opportunity to see a live community production, I realized this was an...Read More
SPRINGVILLE — When given the opportunity to review a production of Little Women, I jumped at the chance. I was lucky enough to see this show when it first opened on Broadway in 2005, and was thrilled by the story. I spent the hour and a half driving to Springville hoping that I would enjoy seeing Little Women in a community setting. I know that one cannot compare a production that has a large budget and professional actors to one that is done in a community setting. However, I do believe that community actors can use passion, creativity, and...Read More
MURRAY — According to the Really Useful Company, the company that owns the rights to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as of 2008 there have been over 20,000 amateur and school productions of this musical mounted in the U.S. I have often joked it is not really summer until you see a production of Joseph somewhere in Utah because the show is extremely popular for community theatre in this state. It is easy to see why that would be. It has a family friendly script, the ability to have simple sets and props, and opportunities for many community members,...Read More
DRAPER — Brigadoon is a musical written by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner that has been around over 50 years. The music is well known, and the story one that brings a person in to a world of fantasy and imagination. What would it be like if for one town time stood still? In the story, two American tourists, Tommy and Jeff, are hiking through the highlands of Scotland when they happen upon a town they cannot locate on the map. Upon entering the town, they discover that the people are in traditional Scottish Tartan and that perhaps there is a secret to this town. Moreover, the town does not seem to be like anything they are used to back in New York. What follows is a story of love, faith, devotion, and belief. The Draper Historic Theatre is in a small building in Draper. I almost drove right past it, but when I realized where I was, I actually felt a bit of excitement. Although seeing a professional production in a big Broadway house is one of the most amazing experiences a theatre lover can have, I am also truly impressed by small communities that work together to not only provide entertainment, but also to foster and develop talent with those willing to work at it. Walking in to the theater, I could hear traditional Scottish music...Read More
CENTERVILLE — South Pacific has long been one of my favorite shows, so I was quick to take an opportunity to review it at Centerpoint Legacy Theater in Centerville. As I sat waiting for the performance to begin, I enjoyed the Polynesian music playing in the auditorium, and spent some time admiring the set. The stage had very realistic looking palm trees on the sides, and a beautiful backdrop of the ocean and “Bali Ha’i” in the distance. I was impressed as well with the lighting that gave the illusion of a sunset, and the floor of the stage had...Read More
